There are many restaurants out there. A lot of restaurants have dirty secrets that they don’t want customers to know about.
The secrets range from not removing trans fat from their food to not providing their nutritional information.
I love going out to eat in restaurants, but I’m curious as to what goes on in restaurants. While I was reading “Eat This Not That” by David Zinczenko, I found out that restaurants are keeping secrets from their customers. What surprised me was the fact that I go to some of these restaurants and didn’t realize what was going on in them.
I was surprised at some of the restaurants listed in the book. I will share with you the secrets that the restaurant owners don’t want us to know.
This restaurant is not in my neighborhood, but it may be in your neighborhood so I wanted to include this restaurant in this article. The food at Jack In The Box has the most trans fat in America. An example of one of their foods with a lot of trans fat is the Bacon Cheddar Potato Wedges. It has 13 grams of trans fat.
That is nearly six times the amount that the American Heart Association recommends that you get in a day. More than 83 percent of their contains heart damaging processed fat. Out of the 102 items on their menu, only 18 of them are trans fat free. That doesn’t give you too many choices on what to eat.
This is one of the restaurants that I go to all of the time. Their donuts and muffins are the best. Unfortunately, it made the list. The muffins at Dunkin’ Donuts are worse than the donuts. Even the reduced fat blueberry muffin still has 450 calories.
This is more than all but two donuts. I don’t order the muffin that much, but now that I know how many calories are in the muffin, I will stay away from it. I will stick with the donuts.
KFC still uses partially hydrogenated oils in their food. Partially hydrogenated oils is trans fat for those who don’t know what that is. KFC leads you to believe that the trans fat is only in the gravy, but it’s not. KFC mentions on their website that their chicken contains zero trans fat.
Unfortunately, partially hydrogenated oils appear 83 times on its list of ingredients. Their potatoes, rice, and sauces also contain partially hydrogenated oils.
I don’t eat at this restaurant the way I used to. The only thing I used to get was the potato wedges. I used to get them before I did my research on restaurants.
The Cheesecake Factory doesn’t reveal its nutritional information to the customers. That is never a good sign because you will never know how many calories you are eating. According to their website, they give generous portion sizes of their food.
To their credit, they do offer to put the food in doggie bags for you. That still doesn’t tell you how much fat and calories are in the foods you are eating. I don’t eat cheesecake so it wouldn’t be hard for me to avoid eating here.
IHOP and T.G.I.Fridays
Like the Cheesecake Factory, IHOP and T.G.I.Fridays do not offer nutritional information about their foods. IHOP offer a variety of foods for different times of the day. The drawback is you don’t know how much you are eating. IHOP gives very large portions of their food that you could be eating too much fat and not know it.
IHOP and T.G.I.Fridays serve some of America’s unhealthiest foods. Luckily they are required by law in New York to provide calorie counts to their foods. At least you will know how many calories you’re eating.
Applebee’s Weight Watchers menu has double the calories and up to eight times the fat that they say they do. These are supposed to be healthy foods, but they are the complete opposite. You might be better off getting the foods that aren’t on the weight watchers menu. I haven’t been to this restaurant yet so I don’t know how healthy or unhealthy the food is here.
The veggie burger isn’t as healthy as they claim. It has 952 calories, 53 grams of fat, and 95 grams of carbohydrates. This doesn’t sound healthy to me. An average burger has 1,103 calories. The veggie burger isn’t that much healthier than the average burger. They shouldn’t claim that it’s healthy when it has so many calories and fat.
Most of the lattes at Starbucks have more sugar than a two-scoop ice cream sundae. The website says that one Grande Latte provides half the dairy you need for the day. They fail to tell you that some of those lattes also provide a lot of sugar.
In fact, it’s more sugar than you need in one day. Some of their drinks have at least 31 grams of sugar. This is with no whipped cream.
Cutting back on the whipped cream and sugar doesn’t help the drink. The fat-free versions of the drink are worse than the ones with the fat.
You will eat more calories at Subway than at McDonald’s. People tend to eat too much because the food is healthy. They order more calories in side orders thinking that they are saving calories because the sandwich is healthy.
At sit-down restaurants, the food is worse than at fast food restaurants and more expensive. An average entrée can be 867 calories without appetizers, side orders, and desserts. Appetizers, side orders, and desserts can easily double your calorie intake.
They serve bigger food portions than at fast food restaurants. A McDonald’s cheeseburger has only 300 calories because it’s little. A cheeseburger at Outbacks is five times the size and six times the calories. This frightens me because I order cheeseburgers when I go to Outbacks.
The free brown bread and butter at Outbacks make the calories even worse. I will probably stay away from those the next time I go to Outbacks.
Of course there are healthier options. One place I like to go for healthier food is Treebeards – Houston catering for downtown events. They even do healthy food for catering events.
Those are all the secrets that restaurants are keeping from their customers. You should try to be careful of what you’re ordering when you’re eating out. You will be amazed at how many calories and fat you are taking in while eating out.
